Geography
The Geography Department consists of 4 members of staff. Boys have two Geography lessons per week in their first two years and three in their last three years.
Geography at the younger end of the school focuses on familiarising the boys with the map of the world and beginning to learn about continents and capitals. Physical geography is introduced. By Form III (year 6) the essentials of the Common Entrance syllabus are being introduced both in physical and human geography. These are then explored in greater depth during Forms I and II (years 7 and 8) and Ordinance Survey map work skills are also taught. By the end of their time at the school all boys are expected to have a very good knowledge of location world geography.
Fieldwork is an important part of the teaching of Geography. In Form III there is a two day trip to the Suffolk coast to study coastal features and human settlement patterns. In Form II we take them to the Peak District for two days to study river features and other physical landforms. In Form I as part of the Common Entrance exam we conduct an in depth settlement study of Market Harborough which involves interviewing members of the public and collating questionnaire data. |
