Match Reports

Maidwell 91 all out Wellingborough 93 for 2

A glorious sunny day heralded the first match of the cricket season. It was a particularly useful day for the team because it was the first time this year for them to step out onto a cricket pitch. Wellingborough played well throughout the day. They bowled very competently and kept their fielding tight with some excellent catches. Our batting picked up with Hugo Webber, Alex Bradshaw, Tom Ritson and Jacob Jefferis making boundaries and daring runs, but all too late to reach a decent total within the time. Hugo, our captain, kept the fielders in good positions and encouraged well throughout.

Maidwell 100 for 8 Spratton 72 for 7

It was great to see the boys on top form with an exciting match. Alex Bradshaw opened the batting and kept his head brilliantly. Alex Saunders showed the rest of the team how to score runs. His excellent example set the benchmark for the others. Tom Ritson's batting was also notable and he was very quick on his feet. There was great excitement as we reached a hundred runs in the last over. Our fielding was excellent: Hugo captained well again and kept our fielding tight. Johnny Beck Brown ran out their first batsman with an excellent throw from mid on. Michael Keith bowled very well with one wicket and then one bowl & catch. Oliver Brackenbury had two wickets from his fast bowling. Harry Stroud took one wicket, bowled one maiden and had no wides or no balls in his four overs. All in all it was a very pleasing win over Spratton. Well done boys!

Maidwell 89 for 6 (on grass) Stoneygate 94 for 3 (on astro)

A re-match later on in the season would be an excellent idea to allow both sides to prove themselves. Hugo Webber, our captain, reached 40 not out. There were some excellent wickets by Michael Keith, Patrick McDonnell and Johnny Beck Brown. Mr Saunders helped tremendously in giving our batsmen a last minute word before heading out.

Maidwell 110 for 8 Akeley Wood 103 for 9

A good win for the Colts B. The match certainly picked up towards the end of the game when Akeley realised that they needed 12 runs an over to win. Harry Stroud had our best performance with two wickets and one bowl and catch. Patrick MacDonnell and Michael Keith also took wickets. Tom Ritson’s wicket keeping was sound and he made a fine catch at one point. Along with a good contingent of supporting parents and a sunny day, it was a very pleasant occasion.

Maidwell (Colts C) 120 for 6

Bedford 155 for 4

A confident win by Bedford. I thought our boys did very well indeed and displayed good sportsmanship throughout. Arthur Margetson was an excellent captain. He kept the team in good spirits and on their toes fielding. George Plant kept wicket very well, particularly considering that this was a new position for him and made one excellent catch. William Trudgill had a good go at bowling and did well to protect his boundary at deep cover. Max Wilson’s fielding was the best in the team; his quick reflexes at mid-on saved several boundaries! Harry Simpson was our star batsman with 33 not out. His partnership with Charlie Seddon, who was also not out, lasted more than eight overs – a record for Charlie! Peter Wang’s bowling is really coming on and he was very encouraged by his wicket. Will SP had a good go at bowling and was quick on his feet fielding. Leo, Rahim and Yuma didn’t get to bat this match, but were keen and willing fielders. Their next match is against Spratton after half term…!

Maidwell 124 for 6

Bilton 123 for 5

A rainy afternoon at Bilton turned out to be a very exciting match. Bilton elected to bat first and reached 123. Hugo skippered the side with his usual style; it is great that he is now self-sufficient as a captain. Oliver Brackenbury did an excellent bowl and catch. Hugo had two good catches - one off Arthur Margetson's bowling and the other off Michael Keith. Michael Keith had a lovely clean bowl. Arthur also had a beautiful slip catch off Johnny Beck Brown's ball. Johnny bowled best with no wides or no balls and a maiden. I was very worried when our batsmen began to fall like dominoes with some very low totals. After seven overs our total was only 21 (heading towards a total of 60 runs). However, once Tom Ritson and Michael Keith were on the field, the game began to turn in our favour. Tom hit seven boundaries and Michael hit eight, including two sixes. With ten overs to go, they had to maintain a run rate of eight runs an over. Maidwell won with only four balls in hand in the twentieth over! Very, very well done boys!

Maidwell 109 for 8

Winchester House 110 for 8

Winchester House did very well to beat us with one over remaining. It was a very good match and suitably close. It was very good natured and there was good sportsmanship shown by both sides. Hugo Webber, our captain, hit three boundaries and totalled 16 before he was caught. Harry Chubb reached 10, Michael Keith has the most with 17 and Harry Salmons reached 13. Max Wilson and Johnny Beck Brown also batted well, but we ran out of overs. Our bowlers did well. JBB bowled out two in one over. Jacob Jefferis our wicket keeper caught one ball like a fish going into a crocodiles jaws. Harry Chubb bowled three and caught and bowled another.

Maidwell 88 for 5 Beachborough 75 for 5

Even though it was down in the calendar as a B/C game, Beachborough requested an easier match and we put forward an entirely Colts C team with a reversed batting order and everyone bowling two overs in order of birthday. Peter Wang was our top batsmen reaching 29 runs. William Trudgill bowled very well with one wicket and one maiden over. Peter Wang bowled a maiden over that included a fine catch by George Plant our wicket keeper and a nice run out due to an excellent throw from Charlie Seddon in deep cover. Harry Simpson had two maidens and Arthur Margetson had one. Then came the Colts C champagne moment: Leo was our bowler position fielder and so, because Arthur was bowling, was in the slip position. The ball leapt off the bat in an arc, heading behind and to one side of Leo, who, amazingly, caught it! I think that most 1st XI players would have missed that ball, but somehow he reached it. That left the prossecco moment that happened in the final over: Yuma got a wicket! Well done lads.
