Match Reports

v Swanbourne House
Maidwell 151 for 4 Swanbourne 131 for 4

Alex Palmer, our opening batsmen and captain, retired after reaching a century giving the others a chance to reach an excellent total. He hit two sixes and belted plenty of fours. He also got one wicket with his bowling. As a result, we’ve now lost him to the Colts A team. Henry Keith, Archie Forsyth and Hugh Buxton were our key bowlers. Also Cassian Ferrari bailed us out at the end when all our bowlers had finished their quota. Our fielding needs to sharpen up before next Wednesday when we play Wellingborough.

v Wellingborough
Maidwell 25 for none Wellingborough all out for 24

Under our captain, Lochie Payne, we won the toss and elected to field first. After 16 overs, the final Wellingborough wicket fell after totalling 24 runs. There was some exemplary bowling by Henry Keith, Hugh Buxton, Archie Forsyth and Toby Phillips, involving multiple wickets and maidens each. Our boys' tight fielding kept the run rate down to just 1.5 runs an over.

After tea, it was just some short work required by Charlie Bygott and Charles Granby to get more than 24 runs, which they managed after hitting several boundaries in just a few overs.

v Stoneygate
Maidwell 138 all out Stoneygate 115 all out

The Colts B continue their unbeaten season with another win. However, there were far too many mistakes against their accurate bowling so we must not be complacent –the majority of our boys were clean bowled, bails flying. Also our bowling must be tightened up –a total of 31 wides and no balls! Charlie Bygott was our star batsman, who totalled 30 runs that included 6 boundaries. Our star bowler was Hugh Buxton with two wickets. Cassian Ferrari, Archie Forsyth and Toby Phillips also bowled well. Our fielding was excellent –kept tight by Lochie Payne, who is proving to be a highly competent: the opposition only hit the boundary 3 times. Now we set our sights on Saturday’s game against Spratton.

vs Spratton
Maidwell 37 for none Spratton 36 all out after 12 overs

The boys did brilliantly – what a team! We won the toss and Lochie, our captain, elected to field first. Archie Forsyth, Hugh Buxton and Henry Keith all had two wickets each, four of which were ducks. Oliver Peppiatt took two amazing slip catches! Our fielding was nice and tight, and we managed to run them out twice. After tea, it was just short work by Charlie Bygott and Charles Granby to reach their total. Charles Granby deserves a mention for hitting four boundaries off four balls in succession. Next Wednesday, though, we should have our guard up as we'll be playing Bedford - who convincingly beat Spratton earlier on in the season. Well played team!

vs Bedford
Maidwell 113 for 6 Bedford 109 all out

An astounding win. There are more than 200 boys to choose from for Colts Bs at Bedford compared to 23 here at Maidwell. It was an emotionally draining game. They batted first and started hitting boundary after boundary but then, due to beautiful bowling, they began to drop like flies until their back was broken and our boys had got them down to their last few batsmen until they were all out for 109.

As usual, Lochie Payne captained the side with skill and maturity and kept the fielding tight, keeping everyone on their toes and being encouraging and constructive when we were giving away runs. Charles Granby clean bowled one and caught two from his own delivery. Archie Forsyth clean bowled their number one batsman out. Hugh Buxton clean bowled two and made two magnificent catches. Henry Keith also clean bowled two. At tea, our spirits were high as we thought it was a done deal. However, then our number one to three batsmen quickly fell totalling three runs between them – disaster! It was therefore up to Archie Forsyth (37 runs, including seven fours and the only six of the game), Arthur Fenwicke-Clennell (6 runs), Hugh Buxton (10 runs), Henry Keith (22 not out, who kept his cool and was not fazed, in the face of accurate bowling by having to play defensively for many balls in succession, resisting the temptation to hit out) and Oliver Peppiatt (10 not out, who finished the game with a lovely boundary) to save the day, which they did –very, very well played boys, well done!

Colts C Cricket vs Spratton, Wednesday 9th June 2010
Maidwell 86 Spratton 39

A convincing win by the Maidwell Colts Cs. Under Archie CB’s diligent captaincy, the boys did very well to get a respectable total. Each pair of batsmen had three overs each, maximum 6 balls per over, minus 5 runs for being out and extras counted as 2 runs. Considering the paired overs limit, there were some respectable totals: Arthur FC 14; Archie Cook 8; Crispin Jolly 7; Archie CB 7. Our star bowler was Archie Cook who achieved 5 wickets in just three overs. Hugo Webber, Sebastian Prentice, William Trudgill and Crispin Jolly also bowled well and got a wicket each. Arthur Margetson and Charlie Seddon deserve a mention for their good fielding. Jontham and Gleb also enjoyed our very drippy English afternoon and joined in the team effort. Well played all!

vs Great Houghton
Maidwell 170 for no wickets, declared Great Houghton 43 all out

Congratulations to Charlie Bygott and Charles Granby for their half centuries and I thank them for graciously retiring to give the others a bat. Charlie hit two sixes and Charles finished on a boundary from a reverse sweep. Again Lochie Payne captained the side in a sportsmanlike manner and graciously declared for the sake of the opposition. Six of their batsmen were out for ducks. Their first two were run out in the first over (well done Archie Cook, who hit the stumps from the boundary and Arthur FC for the other); Archie Forsyth clean bowled their number 3; their number 4 was caught by Lochie from Cassian’s bowling; Sam Boscawen then bowled their number 5; Charles Granby bowled their out their 6 & 7; to finish, Charlie Bygott (Lochie gave some of our non-bowlers a go) caught one off his own ball and then clean bowled their final two in a magnificent final triple wicket maiden!

vs Bilton Grange
Maidwell  206 for 7 Bilton  89 all out

It was a pleasing and convincing victory over Bilton Grange. Well done again boys! Only one more match to win for an unbeaten season. Before the match had begun we agreed not to declare or ask anyone to retire to allow scope for some records. Well done to Charles Granby for his 69 runs. Another notable score was Oliver Peppiatt with 47, not out, who just needed one more over to gain his half century. Other good totals were from Charlie Bygott and Arthur FC. I was very pleased that they scored more than two hundred runs! Lochie, our captain, who usually bats number three, on his own instigation kindly stood aside and batted eleventh to allow boys further down the order a bat. When it came to fielding they kept it really tight all the way through. Their highest scorer reached 16 runs and four were out for ducks. Their first one to fall was a magnificent catch by Oliver Peppiatt from Charles Granby's bowling. The next was clean bowled from a very fast ball by Henry Keith. Then Charles Granby caught one off Toby Phillips' bowling. The next three were all clean bowled by Archie Forsyth and then Lochie caught another off his bowling. Charles Granby clean bowled another and then caught their final lad off Joseph Ayoub's bowling. They got them all out for 89 and stopped them from reaching a hundred. Bravo!

vs Akeley Wood
Maidwell 47 for 1 Akeley Wood 46 all out

A short but sweet end to a magnificent unbeaten season. Akeley Wood opted to bat first and managed a total of 46 before they were all out in eleven overs. It was the domino effect yet again: Archie Forsyth bowled three and then ran two out from boundary throws; Joseph Ayoub bowled two; Charles Granby ran one out from a boundary throw; Charlie Bygott and Cassian Ferrari caught one out each. After tea it was short work for the boys to reach 46, which they did in six overs. Well done to Charles Granby for hitting two sixes in a row!
