Match Reports

V Bedford Prep (Training Sessions)

Bedford are always a tough start to the season and as usual both sides use this early start to the season as a trial match. We played three matches of 15 minutes and were able to come away with a clearer idea of what needs to be worked on. Bedford are an excellent side who had quality players in every position. We were certainly overawed in the first match but in the 2nd and 3rd sessions we were able to come up with some decent passages of play. There is much to work on, first up tackles were poor and we needed to be up much quicker in defence. This will come and I look forward to seeing a much improved Maidwell side next week against Oakham.

V Oakham

Maidwell 12  Oakham 12

This was a much improved performance in all areas of the team's play. Our forwards smashed into the Oakham team and we had a majority of possession in the first Half. A good move by the pack saw Archie Wilson go over from a ruck and it seemed that it would only be a matter of time before more tries came. Oakham came out much stronger in the 2nd half and managed to score two tries. Jasper Upton powered over from a penalty 5 metres out in the dying seconds and the draw was secured. I suspect Oakham will feel the luckier of the two but they took their chances and it was a fine game to watch. Still bits and pieces to work on but a fine game by all involved.

V Stoneygate

Maidwell 37  Stoneygate 0

What an outstanding performance from the Maidwell team. Forwards and backs were excellent from start to finish and put a talented Stoneygate side to the sword with ruthless efficiency. The forwards ran hard at the opposition and were able to create good clean ball for the backs to run. Maidwell scored some well constructed tries after good phase rugby. Well done to all the boys.

V Oundle

Maidwell 47  Oundle 0

Another good performance by the Maidwell team saw them comfortable winners against Oundle. Again the forwards laid a solid platform with some ferocious rucking. Pepe Barroso scored 3 tries to cap off a good performance, ably assisted by some strong running from Humphrey FitzRoy Newdegate who scored 2 tries. It was good to see both backs and forwards linking together in order to produce flowing rugby.

V Spratton Hall

Maidwell 0  Spratton 37

This was always going to be a tough match against a very good Spratton Hall side. The forward battle was good to watch but too many turn overs allowed the classy Spratton backs opportunities to score.

V Great Houghton

Maidwell 47  Great Houghton 7

I was very pleased to see us bounce back so positively after Saturday’s defeat. Once again the forwards dominated possession against a bulky side and we were able to spread the ball to the wings. Tries were shared between forwards and backs after good phase play.

V Beachborough

Maidwell 36  Beachborough 14

Maidwell played their first match since returning from Dublin against a strong Beachborough side. Beachborough broke away in the first minute to score which woke up our players. The forwards provided good ball and we were able to control possession which led to some excellent tries.

V Bilton Grange

Maidwell 10  Bilton 7

What a fantastic game of rugby this was. Both sides committed to playing fast, aggressive rugby. Maidwell edged the game at the break down and were able to secure ball as well as slowing down the opposition's possession. Maidwell played some excellent phases and a try in the corner by Barroso got us off to a good start. It was half way into the second half that the captain Barrow took off on a jinking run only to be stopped on the line. The forwards won the ball and Barrow again went blind to score. To their credit Bilton threw everything at us and scored a try.

V Swanbourne House

Maidwell 15  Swanbourne 0

This was a superb performance by Maidwell's 1st XV against a very well drilled Swanbourne side. The forwards laid a great platform and the backs ran really hard. Really well done to the 1st XV.
