In spite of the afternoon rain, we managed a full tennis fixture against Great Houghton. The senior team played a set against their respective pair first, followed by the juniors. Then both teams played another shorter set, with the second and third pair on each team playing each other. Overall we won the senior match but Ignacio Danobeitia and Nick Bell at first pair played below their normal standard. The colts team also won their match but Sam Boscawen and Archie Cleverly at first pair had a tough time against their opposite pair which included a county girl player.
This year's Winchester House team was extremely strong with a formidable record. As a result we only won 2 matches at the senior level and none at colts level. The colts team found the conditions difficult on windy courts and didn't play their best tennis. Our senior team played were rather inconsistent but there were some very close contests. At first pair Danobeitia and Bell won two of their three matches and manaaged to come back from 5-1 down to narrowly lose to the first pair 6-5. James Phillips and Javier Cerezo played very well and nearly beat a very impressive third pair; in fact they were 4-0 up at one stage. For Milo Cook and James Macdonald-Buchanan it was a disappointing afternoon.

The evening after the Winchester House match we played Spratton Hall and this was a very different experience. The weather was perfect and there was a great sporting atmosphere and a lot of excellent tennis was played. I think it was the best Maidwell tennis I have witnessed. All 4 senior pairs played very well and we only lost 3 matches out of 16. James Cleverly and Milo Cook at 3rd pair had the most exciting match of the afternoon narrowly losing to the 1st pair in the tie-breaker having been 4-1 up in games at one stage. The colts won all their matches with Tom Henderson and Sam Holland-Bosworth at 2nd pair not losing a single set. |
