Match Reports

v Akeley Wood

Maidwell 303 [Won by 38 runs]

Akeley 265

A very positive first performance after only three training sessions. We bowled and fielded well to restrict Akeley to a lowish score. Fred Peppiatt took two wickets and Harry Stroud one. Our first pair of George Henderson and Alfie Farr got us off to an excellent start and scored 47 runs in their 4 overs - 38 runs coming off only 10 balls. We then pushed quickly towards their total and although we lost some wickets in the middle part it was a very comfortabnle win in the end.

v Beachborough

Maidwell 301 [Won by 20 runs] Beachborough 281

This was a 10-a-side game with some other boys coming into the side from last week's B team. We bowled first and took 8 wickets in total, including three in one over from Fred Peppiatt. The fielding was quite good, with only a few mis-fields. Each pair made good contribtions with the bat scoring around 20 runs in each 4 overs. There was some strong hitting from Max Pettifer, George Henderson, Max Wilson and William Duncan.

v Stoneygate

Maidwell 264 [Won by 8 runs]  Stoneygate 256

This was a very even contest. We batted first and got off to a slow start. Freddie Peppiatt finally got us moving to a decent total with some strong hitting. Our bowling was tight and everytime Stoneygate got close to our run rate we took a wicket, including the first catches for the team. In the end we held on to a pleasing win.

v Wellingborough

Maidwell 302  [Won by 29 runs] Wellingborough 273

We bowled first and kept them to a low score which would have been even better had it not been for 3 dropped catches and some sloppy fielding at times. Some boys impressed with their line and length. Our batting was solid and each pair pushed things along at a good rate. Alfie Farr impressed with some strong hitting at the end.

v The Grove U9A

Maidwell 301  The Grove 257

We lost the toss and the Grove decided to bat. We took some early wickets to keep their score low, but then our bowling went awry and they started to pile on the runs.Thankfully we took some very good catches and reduced their runs.  We batted with real purpose and played some very good shots. However, we gave away some cheap wickets including two hit wickets, some very silly run-outs and The Grove took caught some amazing catches. Still a very good win and we can look forward to a week without fixtures where the boys can hone their skills and prepare for some difficult encounters after half-term.

v Swanbourne

Maidwell 219  [Lost by 52 runs] Swanbourne 271

This was by far our worst performance of the term. We played in an unfamiliar environment of a netted area with no boundaries and different rules for scoring. I thought we would cope well with this, but I was sadly wrong. We bowled first and did reasonably well, taking 8 wickets in total including some good catches. Were it not for Swanbourne's last pair who scored more than the rest of the team, it would have been even better. However, our batting just disintergrated. Faced with some quick and straight bowling we lost 17 wickets in total, most of which would have been avoided if we had played straight, not exposed our stumps and not taken some silly runs. Seventeen wickets = 85 runs and would have led to a comfortable win. Taking nothing away from Swanbourne who were attacking and aggressive in the field.

vs Bilton Grange

Maidwell 280  [Won by 16 runs]

Bilton Grange 264

This was a pairs 20 over hard ball game with all five pairs batting for four overs.

We bowled first and kept them to a lowish score on a beautiful wicket and outfield. Altogether we took 6 wickets and fielded brilliantly. Our main bowlers were excellent and Henderson and Peppiatt especially gave away very few runs.

Our batting was solid with the two heavies of Peppiatt and Salmons putting on 30 runs in their four overs. Needing 8 runs to win with the final pair, Farr and Duncan batted very sensibly, running 1's and 2's and not giving away any wickets.

This was a wonderful afternoon for all players and spectators, with the game being played in the right spirit. An excellent advertisement for U9 hard ball cricket

vs Spratton

Maidwell 61-6

Spratton 51-8

This was a good all round display from the young Maidwell team.  The two opening batsmen got the team off to a solid start with some strong stroke play and good running between the wickets.  When the home side came to bowl and field I was very impressed with all bowlers on show today.  In the main they bowled straight and deserved their early successes.  A close match was eventually won.
