History
The History Department is vibrant and creates an environment of meaningful learning coupled with a great sense of enjoyment as the children learn about the past. We have produced a steady stream of A grades for Common Entrance and have great experience at preparing candidates for scholarships.
The department is staffed by 4 teachers all of whom are experienced and passionate about the subject. In the junior part of the school the emphases is on invaders and settlers and learning about the great civilizations. Here the Greeks, Egyptians, Roman Britain, Saxons, Vikings and Normans are taught in ways appropriate for the age groups. There are a number of practical lessons and much use is made of historical re-enactments and visits to historical sites. Recently the children have visited the Saxon Church at Brixworth, taken part in a Saxon re-enactment day in a Saxon roundhouse, visited Sutton Hoo and have visited the Roman Villa site at Piddington.
In the senior part of the school the emphasis is on the Tudors and Stuarts. Again much use is made of practical lessons as the children are encouraged to experience hands-on history. We have had Tudor days where the senior part of the school is turned into a 16th century environment and we make great use of the Tudor and Stuart history around us. We are fortunate to have easy access to sites like the Naseby battlefield, The Triangular Lodge and a number of excellent museums. |
