Match Report

Vs Stoneygate

Maidwell 340

Stoneygate 289

This was an excellent start to the cricket season for the Under 9 B team.  The boys played with a fantastic spirit and camaraderie that encouraged and allowed each and every one of them to make a positive contribution to the team. It also made for a welcome atmosphere for the visitors from Stoneygate.

Maidwell lost the toss and were put into bat. The opening pair of Archie Forsyth and Alex Palmer made a composed and solid start, scoring 34 runs off their four overs.  The other three pairings knocked up similar totals, with Charlie Bygott and Henry Keith proving to be the biggest individual scorers. The 16 boundaries that Maidwell struck would prove to be the winning factor.

The Maidwell bowling was variable, at times deadly accurate (particularly from Archie Forsyth and the team's captain, Cassian Ferrari), at other times, very wide indeed! Fortunately, the Stoneygate batting was not strong enough to punish the weaker bowlers and Maidwell ran out (no pun intended!) comfortable winners.

Vs Beachborough

Maidwell 349

Beachborough 264

What a wonderful demonstration of the "strength in depth" that exists in Form V.  Beachborough's request for 10-a-side matches was gratefully received as it allowed us to play almost every boy in the year.  The debutantes were excellent: Finn Lydiard-Wilson and Archie Clifton-Brown 'backed up' superbly and called confidently as they ran between the stumps; Sam Boscawen's bowling was very economical and he joined the six-hitter Charlie Bygott in a wonderful 47 run opening partnership; Joseph Ayoub's fielding was outstanding, including a throw out from close to the boundary.  Lochie Payne's 22 runs off the last over must also merit a special mention, but the attitude and competence of all the boys is highly commendable.  Beachborough were no match for the Maidwell team, but the game was played in a great spirit for which all 20 boys should be congratulated.

Vs Spratton Hall

Maidwell 283

Spratton 224

This was an excellent effort by the boys, showing good strength in depth in the year group. We played a 12-a-side format with an incrediball (red, but softer than a cricket ball). We batted well and scored freely against some good bowling. However, the boys stepped up their game and took many wickets, with some very good fielding and catches.

Vs Bilton Grange

Maidwell 134

Bilton Grange 89

I must give great credit to the boys who played with great spirit in this rather one-sided and slightly frustrating match.  Bilton Grange, blighted by illness on the morning of the game, had called up a number of pre-prep boys to be able to provide a team.  Bilton's bowling was littered with wides and no balls making it rather difficult for the Maidwell batsmen to actually hit the ball - although I had encouraged them to chase it, just to give them a bit more interest in the game.  Some good strokes were played, but Maidwell's frustration meant that they tried to knock the cover off any straight ball and subsequently missed it rather than placing it and scoring runs.  Despite the difficulties, Maidwell accumulated a laudable total of 134 and set to work in the field.  Joseph Ayoub and Sam Boscawen were excellent as the opening bowlers and showed the benefits of keeping it straight.  Some of the remaining Maidwell bowlers were clearly a little out of practice and attempted to emulate the Bilton attack, spraying the ball anywhere within a 10 metre radius of the wicket.  I'd like to say a big 'Well done' to the boys who have all worked very hard this year.
