Art and Design

The Art Room is an exciting venue, used for lessons and extra-curricular activities.  It provides an ideal environment for exploration and learning within which pupils encounter opportunities to develop aesthetic, perceptual, technical and social skills, in particular the discussion of ideas and expression of opinion.

Each project is set in social and historical context thereby introducing an element of Art History alongside the theoretical and practical aspects of the work.  There is an emphasis upon learning the basic elements which form a firm foundation for the development of a range of creative skills.  Drawing, painting, printing, collage, ceramics, modelling and sculpting are all included in the programme of study. Movements studied include Impressionism, Fauvism, Surrealism, Cubism and Abstract Expressionism.  Use of the Internet is encouraged for exploration, information and research.

Art clubs extend individual interests and skills; Cartoon Club and the Advanced Art Club are well attended.  From time to time professional artists are invited to hold Master Classes in their field.

Pupils’ work is exhibited internally and externally and the crème de la crème is displayed in a semi-permanent exhibition in the school dining room.  One selected piece of artwork produced in school is auctioned annually to raise funds for the school’s chosen charity.

Design Technology aims to give all students a thorough understanding of structures, balance, rigidity, cams, levers, pneumatics and hydraulics.  Moving toys, tipper trucks, and elastic-band buggies are examples of some of the work undertaken.  The provision of plans, technical drawing, nets, working to scale and health and safety issues are areas covered.  At the top end of the school problem solving related to the commercial world of production and economics is encouraged.
